Story Thieves: Pick the Plot
Much to my delight and amusement, I soon discovered after finishing book three that my parents had also bought the fourth part ‘Story Thieves: Pick the Plot’ and gave it to me as a surprise. The book has around 370 pages and like all the other books, its genre is adventure. It is also published by Aladdin in the year 2017 and the first paperback edition was published in 2018. It is written by James Riley.
After reading this book, I felt as if I too was fictional. There were so many twists and turns that it was not easy to remember where and when a detour was taken and because sinister narrator Nobody is typically inconsistent on the guidance. This can be loads of fun entertainment for some but for others who would like to get on with the story may find it exasperating.
As the name suggests, the readers mostly get to choose the plot. After almost every chapter, we get some choices with the page numbers. The choices change the story and if Owen dies, we either have to turn back to page 1 or we can choose the other option. But the main plot is this: Owen finds himself trapped in a time prison in the prehistoric era that erases everyone’s memory once it is 12 midnight. Thankfully, he meets Kara Dox and somehow she recognizes him even if they have never met before. Still, they both plan to escape. Owen has to stop Nobody(a character in the book) from splitting Bethany in half and separating the fictional and non-fictional world. But its all up to us when we pick the plot. The reader gets to choose how the story goes.
Will Owen be able to convince you, the reader, to help him find his way back to Bethany? Or will you feed him to dinosaurs just to teach him a lesson? It’s all up to you when you Pick the Plot.
The characters in the book are Owen, Bethany, Kara Dox, The Countess, her daughter, Nobody and future Owen. Kara Dox was a book character and it was her book Owen was trapped in. She could time- travel and was immune to paradoxes. The Countess was a prisoner and was very evil and wanted to escape but couldn’t get the lock code. Her daughter was named Dolores and was equally evil and helped her mother try get the code. She had powers to slow down time. Future Owen was Owen’s future about 10 years later. He helped them defeat the Countess.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys pick-the-plot books and adventures. And anyone who likes cracking codes will also enjoy the book. It is a bit confusing if you haven't read the rest of the series, so maybe before reading this book you should read the other great books in this series.
If you read this book and liked it, you must read the fifth and final book in the series, which is Story thieves: Worlds apart. I recommend this book for readers of age 9- 12.
